According to information from Hoa Binh General Hospital in Vietnam, on September 24, the male student experienced severe pain in his neck spine and felt paralyzed on his right side after playing on his phone for several hours at night. His family took him to the ยูฟ่าเบท emergency room.

Doctors found that the patient was still conscious but had hemiplegia, had leg muscle strength of 2/5 and arm muscle strength of only 1/5, and had pain in multiple areas of the cervical spine. They suspected that the cervical spine and spinal cord might be involved, so they had the patient undergo an MRI, which found a large blood clot on the outer layer of the spinal cord membrane on the right side of the cervical spine, causing severe compression of the spinal cord.

The doctor diagnosed that it was a blood clot outside the cervical spinal cord membrane and required emergency surgery. The surgery took 1.5 hours and used a microscope to perform the surgery, which allowed the blood clot to be successfully removed with only a small wound. The doctor also performed procedures to stop the bleeding and relieve pressure on the spinal cord.

Recovery after surgery improved rapidly. The patient was able to move her arms and legs within the first day after surgery, with strength in her arms and legs increasing to 4/5. The doctors expressed their delight that the surgery was a great success. The patient then underwent rehabilitation and physical therapy to restore movement until she fully recovered.

Opinions from medical experts

Dr. Trương Như Hiển, Deputy Director and Head of Neurosurgery. Said that extramedullary hematoma is a rare disease that is often overlooked in diagnosis. It is often caused by abnormal blood vessels in the spinal cord or spinal injuries. Patients need to receive timely examination and treatment to prevent serious complications from spinal cord compression.

This disease is often found in the elderly with underlying diseases such as high blood pressure or severe osteoarthritis. However, in the case of this patient, who is only 15 years old. It is considered a very rare case in his more than 20 years of working.

Playing with mobile phones may be the cause

The patient revealed that before the symptoms occurred, he had been playing mobile phone games continuously for a long time. During that time, he had been moving his neck vigorously, such as turning or jerking his neck, to relieve fatigue. Doctors identified this as the main cause of severe impact on the cervical spine. Which resulted in damage to blood vessels and compression of the spinal cord.

In addition, the doctor also warns that people who often use their phones or tablets in a position. Where they have to look down for a long time will increase the pressure on the spine and make it easier for blood vessels to become congested.

The doctor recommends that those who have health problems such as neck. Shoulder or limb pain, including numbness or tingling in the hands or feet should see a doctor for a checkup and consider an MRI to check for spinal abnormalities.

In daily life, you should be careful about your sitting and standing posture. Especially avoid bending your neck for long periods of time. When going to sleep, you should choose a pillow with an appropriate height. Avoid sleeping in a position where you stretch or bend your neck for long periods of time.

For those who have to sit and work for long periods, they should take breaks every 30-45 minutes. For those who have neck pain, they should avoid twisting or moving their necks quickly. If there is pain, they should seek immediate treatment to prevent further injury.
